Global Approach

A Global Experience
Ravenswood believes that it sits in a global community and the girls
need this perspective in a shrinking world. Their experiences at
school, both in their academic and co-curricular lives, need to provide
the opportunities that will make them global citizens. With this firmly
embedded in our philosophy, the school provides the following
opportunities and experiences:
Learning a Language
In the academic life of the school, there is a strong emphasis on the
study of language and the cultural studies which enrich and support
this. From Kindergarten to Year 6, every student learns French. Once
she comes to Middle School, she maintains the study of at least one
language from the options of French, German, Japanese and Latin. In the
Senior School, all of these languages are on offer as part of the
elective programme for those who choose to undertake the Higher School
Certificate. For those who choose the International Diploma Programme,
Spanish is an additional option to those already mentioned.
Multicultural Week
A highlight of the school’s calendar is the colourful events of
Multicultural Week, held in Term 3 each year. Students have the
opportunity to experience and understand the traditions, taste and
customs of countries from around the world. Particular focus is given
to those countries whose languages are taught at Ravenswood.
Global Exchange
Ravenswood has established student exchange programmes with seven
schools from England, Canada, USA, New Zealand, Germany and Japan. The
school has also established a link with the International School in
Hanoi, Vietnam, a K-6 school. Students in Years 9 and 10 have the
opportunity to apply for exchange to any of the schools and host their
international “sisters” at Ravenswood.
International and National Experiences
Students have the opportunity to undertake global programmes that may
take them anywhere from Central Australia to Europe, South America or
Asia. Many of these programmes combine the cultural experience of
global travel with an outreach component allowing the students to see
beyond their own world and truly understand their place in a global
society. Among the experiences on offer are a trip to Central Australia
with a focus on indigenous studies and understanding, a trip to Peru
helping with the construction of a classroom in a village, a European
Tour with a cross-curriculum focus of history, language and culture.
