Junior School

Ravenswood Junior School welcomes the youngest members of our community to educational experiences which focus on academic, social, emotional and physical development.

From Kindergarten to Year 6, the Junior School focuses on developing: each girl’s passion for life-long learning; her willingness to take on challenges; her confidence to find solutions; and the opportunity for her to explore her skills and interests.

The youngest girls begin their school life in Annesley House, a dedicated, purpose designed Kindergarten cottage. Kindergarten at Ravenswood provides a welcoming transition from home to school with its many learning and play spaces, gardens, cubby house and playground equipment.

As girls progress through the Junior School they are joined in Year 3 and Year 5 by an additional class of girls. This is undertaken to encourage friendships; create a sense of belonging; and to develop a school family where each girl is well-known by staff and other students.

During these years, girls explore a range of subjects including Music, French, Visual Arts, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Physical Education. Their learning also encompasses the development of thinking skills, reading, writing, sport, creative and performing arts and structured play.

The wellbeing and ongoing development of each girl is carefully monitored by experienced teachers and specialist staff. Staff deliberately focus on the enriching and stimulating aspects of education, enabling girls to acquire a thirst for knowledge which over time becomes self-generated.

The resources and facilities of the whole school are available to the Junior School girls. These include a variety of online resources such as SMART Boards, intranet, internet and electronic presentations. These form part of the girls' experience and help to engage and energise them in their passion for learning.

Beyond the classroom a range of activities fosters an environment which supports Ravenswood’s philosophy of ‘learning most effectively by being involved’. These include the CSIRO “Lab on Legs”, Musica Viva, ‘hands on’ workshops, the camps programme and a range of co-curricular activities.

During the Junior years, girls develop friendships across Year groups through Peer Support and Year 12 'Big Sisters' programmes. These provide not only appropriate support and dynamic role models but also inspiration and a sense of belonging to the Ravenswood community.
