Middle School

Ravenswood recognises the significant emotional and physical changes that occur during these years, and aims to provide a tailored approach to support girls as they grow and develop.

International research supports the importance and benefits of a tailored approach, recognising the need for girls to see the relevance of their studies.

During their Middle School years, girls are encouraged to develop a lifelong love of learning; to engage in the learning process; to discover their strengths and interests; and to develop their skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.

The emphasis during this time is on skills development including research, critical thinking, problem solving and study techniques. These provide the future foundations as girls move into their final study years and embark on their career paths.

At Ravenswood, dedicated and experienced staff aim to understand the way each girl learns most effectively. Girls are encouraged to achieve success and independence, and to build confidence, resilience and self esteem.

As an independent school, Ravenswood offers a range of resources and facilities to challenge and stimulate girls. The school’s size allows for a curriculum broad enough to ensure each girl has the opportunity to identify and develop her own interests, while also focusing on her academic, physical and spiritual needs.

Each Middle School Year has its own focus and uniqueness. While a strong core curriculum is adhered to and academic excellence is encouraged, the girls have time for fun and self discovery. Girls are encouraged to explore and participate in a variety of activities including sport, music, drama, dance, photography, digital imaging, debating and many more.

In Year 7, an introduction and transition programme focuses on the expectations and environment of the Middle School. The programme gives girls the opportunity to adapt to their new surroundings and to begin new friendships with each other. Girls also attend a camp that facilitates a united Year group and encourages a sense of belonging and community.

In Year 8, while building skills and proficiency in Mathematics, Science and English, there is an emphasis on the creative and performing arts. Research shows that this emphasis encourages cognitive development that is beneficial in developing an individual’s capacity to act in ways that will enhance their lives.

In Year 9, the focus is on global issues, citizenship and leadership. At this stage girls have a broader choice of electives and leadership opportunities. Girls are encouraged to experience social contexts outside their own background; to attend a wilderness camp; and to be involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme.

In Year 9, girls can also participate in the Ravenswood Global Exchange Programme, which provides opportunities for exchanges across the world.

An integral and important part of the Middle School Programme is the attentive pastoral care of each and every girl. A multi-layered system of monitoring, support and guidance is provided by staff, tutors, Year Coordinators and Year Assistants. In this way, each girl’s needs are identified, allowing staff to assist and guide them in their growth and development.

Tutors provide individual care and meet with girls weekly. Tutors get to know girls over an extended period of time and move with them through to their final study years. Each tutor has approximately ten girls in their care, allowing them to know each girl individually and to monitor her progress.

Year Coordinators and assistants who are specialists with this age group closely monitor each girl’s academic, social and emotional development. They work closely with the Head of School advising on individual girls’ progress and liaising with the School Chaplain and Counsellor.

During their Middle School years, girls are also encouraged to achieve a healthy balance between academic pursuits and co-curricular activities. As part of this, staff and tutors are available to help girls achieve this balance and to ensure they benefit from the many opportunities available during the Middle School years.
