York House

2008 Captain’s Review

You’d think by now I’d be more than ready to give up the banners, the organising, the carnivals, the cheering, the chasing unsuspecting Yorkies with blue and white zinc... but to be perfectly honest, the privilege of being York House Captain 2008, a highlight of my time at Ravo, will be sorely missed.

Getting to know each Year group so well amidst the apparently endless list of House related activities really has meant the world to me. To those who have approached me throughout the year with ideas for upcoming events, those who offered their time when I needed a hand, those who were always on the sidelines showing their support - you kiddies really and truly made the hard work all the more worth while.

I’ll admit, when first informed of my role, I was more than a little anxious. However, initial nerves were all but dissolved after my first House Meeting for the year – the energy, commitment and charisma of the girls ensured we were in for a successful year. What ensued was an impressive list of victories testament to the hard work of my co-captains, without whom I would have quite literally lost my marbles.

Firstly, thanks to Bec Smith, York Social Service Captain. Bec’s organisation meant that fundraising efforts for our charity Wildlife Warriors ran smoothly and efficiently, always bringing in an impressive donation to such a worthwhile cause.

We were lucky enough to land ourselves the School Debating Captain, Thea Thomas, as our own, her years of experience (and an abnormally large brain) aiding in York’s achievement in the revised Inter-House Debating competition.

Chiara Berneschi, Music Captain, deserves not only a huge thank you, but another round of applause. Her talent was reflected in the achievement of the choir, singing their hearts out to an impressive 2nd place. Under a tight rehearsal schedule, Chi was able to channel our energy into music, a fair stretch from the chants and cries of the sporting field.

Last, but definitely not least, thanks to Mae Short, Sports Captain. More appropriately titled ‘Co-Captain’, Masie’s enduring enthusiasm (and competitive streak) provided an invaluable dynamic to the leadership of York this year. Always there, always willing to help and forever hungry for victory, Mae is to be commended for her contribution – she brought energy to the group that cannot be replaced and really was a true friend to me throughout the year.

Placing a close 2nd in the Athletics and Swimming Carnivals as well as in House Choir and an impressive 1st in Inter-House Cricket, Basketball, Netball and Cross Country, I couldn’t be more proud.

Dominating in all areas of Inter-House activity, York 2009 will be a force to be reckoned with. Best of luck to the new captains – I’m sure you’ll enjoy your year as House Captain as much as I have.

Oh, and one last thing... watch out Windsor!
