Dance is offered as an elective to students in Year 10. This subject is expected to continue to grow with Higher School Certificate (HSC) or International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma courses being offered to students as they enter Year 11 from 2016.

Year 10

In Year 10, prior dance experience is not necessary in order to take the elective, although students are encouraged to understand the theoretical and practical demands of the subject.

Students will be introduced to the three core topics of Performance, Composition and Appreciation. Units include:

What is Dance and The Moving Body

Students develop knowledge of anatomy and safe dance practice, learning to identify what their body’s limitations are and how to ensure longevity as a dancer.

Composition 101

Students are introduced to the basic choreographic elements of dance through Space, Time and Dynamics. Students explore a variety of stimuli and create their own dance as art.

Dance and Technology

Students explore a variety of dance and technology mediums, such as dance on film, dance musicals, film clips and many more. Students explore dance films in greater detail and create their own Dance for Film as part of the final assessment task.

Appreciating Dance

Looking at modern choreographers and their influences on dance, students learn to appreciate dance as an art form. Students learn to break down dance as a symbolic and emotional form of expression.

At the conclusion of the year, a Dance Presentation Evening is held where parents, friends and family members can see the work the students have completed throughout the year.

HSC and IB Diploma

Ravenswood will offer Dance from 2016 to students entering Year 11 for both the HSC and IB Diploma.

In addition, all students in Years 10–12 have the opportunity to participate in a variety of Co-Curricular Dance programs.
