Year 2 student Alison has received one of just 20 prizes awarded across the State in the 2017 NAIDOC Week School Initiative Competitions. The competitions aim to provide students with a greater understanding of the importance of friendship and cultural diversity. The judges included Aboriginal Elders and other members of the Aboriginal community. Alison is descended from Maria Lock, the first Aboriginal woman to be granted land and legally marry a white man. Maria’s legacy is treasured by the Aboriginal people. As a 14-year old she beat almost 100 European children to win the major academic prize in the school anniversary examinations in 1819.
