Assessment is a key tool of teaching and learning. The critical purpose is to enhance student engagement and motivation, enable teachers to consolidate learning, to gain in-depth knowledge about each student and to provide valuable data about each student’s individual achievements.

Assessment provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding.

Assessment occurs at three key performance indicators:

  • Before learning commences, to ascertain prior knowledge
  • During the learning process, to monitor the progress and acquisition of knowledge
  • At the conclusion of learning or unit of inquiry, to capture the retained knowledge of content and process.

Differentiated Assessment tasks are undertaken in a variety of ways through formal and informal observations, discussion points, class, group or individually assigned tasks, assignments or testing. Documentation covers all aspects of the assessment process. Students are guided to self-assess and use reflection tools in order to improve their learning and understanding.

Feedback is an important part of the assessment process by providing direction to the student of strategies to use to further develop and enhance her learning.
