Speech provides Secondary School students with the opportunity to develop effective public speaking skills for their future tertiary education and for their personal and social lives. From improvisation to formal persuasive speaking, Speech helps develop confident and self-assured communicators.

Speak Up ‘n’ Out

Speak Up ‘n’ Out aims to equip Secondary School students with confident speaking and listening skills. The objectives are to speak with impact, confidence and total engagement of the listener. The course is conducted as a meeting with a Chairperson, Secretary and Committee members and students have the opportunity to prepare for various public speaking competitions.

Years 7-8 Speak Up ‘n’ Out

Students learn skills to perfect their voice and manner of speaking through prepared and impromptu speaking, news reading, discussion and social speeches. A variety of activities, including preparing book reviews, information reports, pleading a cause and entertaining speeches allow students to build further confidence in their speaking skills. Students may also prepare for Rostrum and the Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition.

Meetings take place once per week after school.

Years 9-11 Speak Up ‘n’ Out

Students build on prior skills to use their voice confidently through prepared and impromptu speaking, news and interpretive reading, conducting a discussion and social speeches. Experience of activities including preparing informative, persuasive and after dinner speeches, preparing and talking from a stimuli with no notes as well as formal toasts, vote of thanks, introductions and presentations, allow students to build further confidence in their speaking skills. Students also prepare for SPEAKFEST, Festival of Speech for Middle Years students, the Australian Individual Debating and Public Speaking Competition (AIDPSC) and the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Competition (WIDPSC).

Meetings take place once per week after school.

Private Tuition

Ravenswood offers Private Speech Communication tuition before, during and after school for students in K-12. Private Speech Tuition is available for speech training in the Australian Speech Communication Association Exams (ASCA) or Trinity Exams, London.
