Established by Ravenswood School for Girls in 2017 to raise the profile of Australian women artists, the Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize aims to address the gender imbalance of artworks by women artists in galleries and museums across Australia.
The Art Prize continues to be the highest-value art prize for women artists in Australia, with $58,000 of prize money on offer across three categories – Professional Artist, Indigenous Emerging Artist and Emerging Artist. There is also a People’s Choice Award. The annual acquisitive prize receives more than double the number of entries than the Archibald Prize.
The Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize transcends limitations of theme or medium, fostering a space where artists are empowered to select works that authentically reflect their artistic practice.
Judging is overseen by Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize Patron and esteemed artist Jade Oakley, and judges Jennifer Turpin, Kathryn Minkley and Kathryn Hendy-Ekers. Guest judges are also invited to assist in the judging.
Winners are announced at an Opening Night event. Finalists’ artworks are displayed and available for sale during the two-week Exhibition of the Finalists held in Gordon on Sydney’s North Shore. Entry to the exhibition is free and a virtual Exhibition of Finalists tour is also available.
