English as a Second Language

  Add to Favourites
English as a Second Language (ESL) is offered as a course study in Years 11–12, for students who have received five years or less education instruction in English. The course is designed to allow students to experience English through a variety of texts, and develop greater confidence in critical and creative writing. Students complete an Area of Study which requires them to study a range of texts, focused on the concept of Discovery. Students are provided with support to develop their writing, listening, speaking and reading skills.

Ravenswood also offers ESL support to students in Years 7-10. It is the aim of the English Department to identify ESL students and to provide immediate strategies and support throughout their learning journey.

In Years 7–8, support is offered in class to students by trained ESL teachers. In Years 9–10, students can enrol in Language and Literacy classes, to assist in their understanding of how to apply their knowledge from a range of subjects, in focused responses. Students in this course receive guidance and instructional lessons in the foundations of English.
