As part of the Spirit Week initiatives for 2022, the School Prefects considered the idea of a Book Drive in order to support flood-ravaged communities in the Northern Rivers. What was needed was to identify a target school or library that had been decimated by the unprecedented flood events.
Such a target was identified with the assistance of a local Anglican School Chaplain who explained the predicament for Trinity Catholic College in Lismore.
This school had been completely inundated and needed rebuilding from the ground up. Their Senior Library had miraculously survived but the Junior Years 7-10 had not. They had lost everything.
What was required were books of fiction and our School community came to the fore. Not only were many, many books donated but our own School Librarians assisted in identifying which books would be most suitable for the Year 7-10 audience.
In such a predicament, it was not convenient for Trinity Catholic College to accept our donation immediately. They needed to re-establish a location before they could take receipt of the books. The over 6 packing boxes of books remained in our possession until confirmation was received that Trinity Catholic College had been able to relocate to the grounds of Southern Cross University in Lismore.
The delivery was made recently, and it was a stark reminder of the devastation to see their Junior Library shelves nearly empty.
Our donation was welcomed with enthusiasm. The Junior School students who assisted with the drop-off were genuinely excited to receive our gift and incredibly grateful.
It is encouraging to see such a meaningful contribution being made, initiated and facilitated by our own students in support of others.
